Nairobi – Jungle Junxion

Nairobi

With two broken shackles (Lake Turkana and Aberdare) we had to get Thumper some attention, and the best place to do this in Nairobi is Jungle Junction. Chris runs the operation here and has many overlanders, back-packers, and people from all over the world who have come to travel around Africa for a year by bicycle, motor-bike, 4×4, back-packing (respect). Many Europeans kit out a car and drive their car across to Africa and then after their trip they store their car with Chris at Jungle Junction until they return for their next African overland journey. Some of the vehicles are insane (you will see this in the pics)

Thanks to Front Runner in Dubai we had to fly in shackles from EFS in South Africa because they were fitted incorrectly which is why we lost both shackles from our Spring-loader system fitted on the rear axle. Anyway this set us back a week in Nairobi and a bit more cash than we expected. Thanks to Mike’s dad who was dealing with EFS in S.A. we managed to sort everything out.

So we had time to kill, and headed to Carnivore for dinner with the Swiss (Johann and Irene) which was a great night out. Did I mention how cold Nairobi was? It was cold, overcast, rainy, and when you are camping there is no escaping the weather. I even accepted a hot water bottle on one particular day when I sat inside the car and read all day long (thank you Swiss team)

Jungle Junxion is a great resting place and you really meet the most fantastic people who are doing the very same thing you are so conversation is always so easy. So if anyone is interested in doing the overlanding thing and would like to have Nairobi as a base for your vehicle, this is the man to speak to and they have an interesting website so check it out for more info.

I won’t lie when I say, I was quite happy when the week had passed and we were finally ready to head to the coast for a little sunshine. We drove through one NP on our way to Malindi and saw loads of Elle and little Rock Duikers sunning themselves. They charge you quite  bit to drive through the park but it is way quicker than driving down to Mombassa and then heading back up the coast, which we would have done but we had run out of time and had to meet The Sparkies for some RnR.
